Botulinum toxin

Botulinum toxin is a very sensitive protein molecular complex. Compared to its weight, it has the highest level of toxicity of all substances, whether natural or not.

This toxin is produced by the bacterium "Clostridium Botulinum". This bacterium is found throughout the world, both on land and in water, normally being inactive for years, but under certain conditions is activated and produces botulinum toxin. This is the case when there is a contamination of the bacterium "Clostridium" in foods, meat or vegetables, and these are stored in an airtight compartment. By eating these foods food poisoning called botulism occurs. Current systems handling and storage of foods currently make almost no risk of botulism, especially considering that cooking eliminates any bacteria present.

Injection (Botulinum Toxin Type A) causes selective and temporary reduction in overactive muscle contraction, for an average period of 12.5 weeks, by selective action on peripheral cholinergic nerve endings.

The main indications for treatment by injection of Botulinum Toxin Type A are:

  • Strabismus and blepharospasm associated with dystonia muscle.

  • Facial asymmetry and facial wrinkles caused by muscle hyperactivity in front area, peri orbital, peri oral and cervical.

  • Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating in the armpits, palms and soles.

Risks

No lingering side effects. Temporarily there may be loss of muscle control in the injected area, usually without altering the function of the injected muscle.

Post operative care

  • During the first 24 hours should be applied cold on the treated area with bandages or makeup removal pads soaked in ice water or serum.

  • If you see any bruising (bruise) may apply creams to reduce it as your surgeon will explain.

  • You can wash and face makeup immediately after treatment with botulinum toxin.

  • You can lead a normal life from the first moment.
